Hopi Ear Candling

The use of ear candles can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians, but is most notably a process used by the Native Americans; namely the Hopi Indians, where the name derives from. Originally believed to have been used for spiritual healing and during initiation and tribal ceremonies for cleansing and purification; ear candles have long since proved their worth on a more physical level also. An ear candle treatment offers all round well-being, balancing the body both physically and spiritually. Many hospitals and GP surgeries in Europe, America and Asia have adopted this process as a recognised medical treatment. However, in the UK, although some GPs may recognise the benefits, it is not a practise generally used within orthodox medicine. Ear candling is also known as Thermal Auricular Therapy.

Ear candles are made from a hollow tube of material, coated in wax. They work by means of the 'chimney' principle. When lit and placed in the ear a gentle drawing effect occurs, lifting away impurities from the ear. Deposits can sometimes be seen in the remainder of the candle following treatment. The rising air vibrates inside the candle gently 'massaging' the ear drum, regulating pressure within the ear. The candles we use are made from organic hemp and beeswax and carry the CE mark.

During a treatment you will lie on your side on a therapy couch; the lit candle will be placed inside your ear and held in place until burnt down to the safety mark. You will often experience a comforting warm sensation and hear slight crackling noises as the candle burns. The candle will then be removed and you will be asked to turn to the opposite side; it is important that both ears are treated to maintain balance. Each candle takes approximately 15 minutes to burn. You will be offered a glass of water to replenish lost fluids, following the treatment. A session can be complemented by a face or scalp massage, while you relax.
