Reiki originated in Japan early in the 20th century with a teacher of theology called Mikao Usui. It is a method of natural healing with similarities to Spiritual Healing.
Both are practiced with no link to a faith and involve the channelling of energies to help with illness or injury.
Eastern medicine has always recognised the concept of Universal energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to our well being. This is known as 'ki' in Japan, 'chi' in China and 'prana' in India. Yoga, Tai chi and Acupuncture are also based on this free-flow of energy throughout the body. The word 'Reiki' means universal life force.
A treatment is performed with the client fully clothed (loose, casual dress is preferred to allow comfort and free flow of energy) either lying on a couch or seated.
During a treatment the practitioner acts as a channel through which the healing energy flows to the recipient. Energy flows to the areas where it is most needed and is often experienced as a feeling of warmth or tingling. The practitioner works on the physical body and the energy field that surrounds it, following their intuition about where the healing is needed for the highest good of the client. An average session will take between half an hour to an hour and benefits are usually felt instantly; although it may be appropriate for further sessions to work more deeply.
Reiki is a powerful therapy because it works on physical, emotional and mental levels. It is common to become deeply relaxed and possibly even fall asleep during the session. It may also generate other reactions; insights into problems, the release of emotions, visions of colours or memories of the past during the session, or afterwards in dreams.
Although Reiki is powerful on its own, it can be safely used alongside allopathic medicine and in conjunction with other holistic therapies to help bring balance to the body and facilitate healing. It is ideal for self treatment (after initiation) and the treatment of babies, animals and plants.
